Get Active Seniors
Get Active Seniors was created to deliver health and wellbeing groups and events for older people in the community. Lots of older people have skills to share and are happy to volunteer their time, and the parish council have helped by providing rooms, facilities, or funding for a tutor.
You don't have to be a Seniors Club member to join in these activities, although there is a waiting list for some groups. Just get touch and we can advise.
If you have an idea for a group, or a skill you'd like to share, we'd love to hear from you!
Senior Strollers
Senior Strollers group is run by our volunteer Pauline Niles.
Seniors Club members can join this vibrant and friendly bunch, who walk once a month in Northamptonshire. The walks are planned to be suitable for those of 65 and over, but you will be advised as to the suitability of the session.
Walks are free to join in, but there are sometimes car parking charges, which are shared by those in the car.
Normally, walks finish at a café or pub, for a chat and a catchup – which is as important as the walking!
Tai Chi
Following consultation with our Seniors Group, we engaged Jeff Hubbard to teach a regular Tai Chi class. We host the class outdoors in Grange Wood Park, during the Summer months, and head inside for the Winter.
The regular class is perfect for our seniors group, to increase core strength and flexibility and that all important balance. You can regularly see our seniors, standing on one leg in the park - at one with nature!
It was so popular that we now have a beginners class too!
Contact the Community Projects Officer to find out more and join the waiting list.
Seniors Petanque
The Pétanque group grew from an idea from some seniors club members who ran a group in Spain. Now a flourishing group of players who head off to Abington Park to play on a monthly basis.
The group is headed up by volunteer Keith, supported by Dave.
Crafty & Creative
We are lucky to have a number of Seniors Club members who like to share their crafting skills – Pauline and Linda are our main volunteers. Seniors Club members can join them for a variety of crafting sessions, held at our activity room in Hunsbury Library.
Some of these sessions attract a small charge when materials have to be purchased.
History Group
The History Group was set up by volunteer Kathy, who is a local historian. A relatively new group, we have held a series of talks and are looking at how the group develop further.
Stargazers
John McEvoy is our resident stargazing expert in East Hunsbury. John has a wealth of knowledge about the stars and the skies, and takes small groups out at night in East Hunsbury, to share his knowledge.
Book Club
Kathy is our volunteer who heads up this new group. Good conversations to be had about what books matter to you and have had an impact. The group are looking to start shared reading soon.
Strictly Seniors
John and Sharron are our volunteers who lead wonderful dance sessions for the group at the Abbey Centre. A really sociable afternoon session – from ballroom to latin.
